And it really is something that the patients are gravitating towards and holding onto, and it gives the patient hope. Not false hope, but a very real hope.” In the following video I sat down with Dr. Kris Smith, a neurosurgeon at the Neurological Institute of Arizona. In this interview, highlights from part of my “Real Skinny on Fat” docuseries, I talk to Dr. Smith about the effect of keto on the human brain. His vast insight on the subject was utterly fascinating and proves to me that keto is more than what so many assume is just a fad diet, and that the effect of keto on the brain is an example of just how powerful the ketogenic lifestyle really is. When most of us think of keto our minds naturally jump to weight loss and eating healthy fats, both of which are true, but how profound keto truly is and the extent of this lifestyle change and what it can do for us is on full display in this interview. For a renown neurosurgeon to treat his patients with sometimes terminal conditions by implementing a diet change and seeing the effect keto has on the brain is absolutely incredible. Over the many years I studied and practiced the keto lifestyle I have been witness to some amazing things and that includes personal experience with how it affects the brain as I experienced and treated my own son’s seizures through diet change and a keto lifestyle and hearing it from Dr. Smith just reminded me of how powerful this really is. I hope it inspires you as it did me. He completed a general surgery internship at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency Program at Banner University Medical Center and completed his neurosurgical residency at Barrow Neurological Institute at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. Dr. Kris Smith trained in Gamma Knife radiosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh and at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where stereotactic radiosurgery was originally developed. He also studied under L. Dade Lunsford, MD, at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Smith specializes in the comprehensive management of brain tumors and the surgical treatment of epilepsy. He uses advanced techniques including stereotaxy, endoscopy, computer-image guidance, brain mapping, deep brain stimulation (DBS), depth and grid electrodes, and Gamma Knife radiosurgery. He emphasizes minimally invasive surgical approaches, which decrease patient discomfort and the risks of complications. However, he strongly believes in aggressive surgical resection of tumors and epileptogenic lesions.
